Russia Takes the Fourth Gold in Teams Standing and Sets Another World Record

This is already 4th gold medal of the Russian team. 50 km race walk among men gave our team an opportunity to win 3 more medals and to set up a new world record. IAAF President Lamine Diack

The President of the International Association of Athlete Federations Lamine Diack shared his views and on the results of the first day of the competitions and made a prediction for the second day calling the Russian team the favourite of the World Cup: “I think, the second day will be the same as the first one. the opening ceremony was very special. “It’s a very happy day for me, I have won the second World Cup. The Russian team is traditionally strong, especially on their own land. It took me much effort to beat them. I had a young opponent, and I was even a bit scared during the distance, fortunately, everything settled… Surely, that’s a very important competition, but at the Olympic Games in Beijing it’s going to be much more difficult. A Walker from Russia Set a New World Record at the World Race Walking Cup

The first victory at the 23rd World Race Walking Cup at the capital of Chuvashia set a new world record. The winner of the juniors men’s 10km race is the Russian athlete Alexei Bartzaikin with his world record time of 39 minutes 57 seconds. 15 seconds behind him finished a walker from China Динг Чен, who set his personal record. The 3rd is a Russian as well - Denis Strelkov is among the prizeholders with 40:17. (more…)

The total of the 1st day of the Cup: Russia surely wins

At the World Race Walking Cup in Cheboksary the Russian team proved the best in team standings in all the three walks – men’s 20 km, junior men and women. The best results have been shown by the Russian junior women who occupied the whole Cup’s podium. The Russian junior men were the 1st and the 3rd. Men’s 20 km silver went to Valeriy Borchin from Saransk race walking school. Thus, the total of the day is as follows: the Russian team have collected the greater number of medals. (more…)

World Cup: Russian Juniors Are World Champions Again

The first day of the 23rd World Race Walking Cup is approaching its end. It brought the Russian team a number of victories. In their saving-box there is the 1st place in team standing among both junior men and women. Race walkers from Russia Tatyana Kalmykova and Alexei Bartsaykin (both from Saransk) bacame world champions. It’s a joyous fact that the Chuvash school of race walking has contributed to the common victory as well: our compatriot Irina Yumanova came second in juniors. (more…)

World Race Walking Cup: Russian Junior Women are the World’s Best

Junior women 10 km race again ended with the Russian anthem. The Russian junior women won all the 3 prizes leaving no chance for their opponents from other countries. The 1st and the 3rd are the walkers from Saransk Tatyana Kalmykova and Elmira Alembekova. The 2nd is a representative of the Chuvash race walking school Irina Yumanova, a pupil of the honourous Russian coaches Albina and Gennadiy Semenov. (more…)

Cheboksary proved its right to be Mecca of race walking

The 23 WRWC starts today on Cheboksary embankment. On the eve, on the 9th of May a solemn opening ceremony took place on the Olympic stadium. This ceremony was one of the brightest sightseeings the citizens of Chuvashia had seen before. This is actually the unanimous point of view of those participated in mini-poll, organized by our journalists right at the exit from the stadium Olympic. (more…)

Ecuadorians Came Second

The morning train Moscow-Cheboksary brought another team of Latin-American race walkers to the capital of Chuvashia. Similar to the team of Columbia, the Ecuadorians have split into 2 groups. The rest of the team members will arrive a few days before the competitions. (more…)


Russia - 15 out of 20 medals - “It’s normal to expect as many victories as this” – Cheboksary 2008

Cheboksary, Russia - Helsinki, Oslo, and Zurich are names to immediately conjure up the notion of athletic greatness.

But Cheboksary? Until this weekend, the capital of Chuvashia in Russia needed a decent atlas to find it 600km east of Moscow. But after crowds estimated to be hovering on the 60,000 mark enjoyed the 23rd IAAF World Race Walking Cup whether fans like it or not the city will command a place in the record books. (more…)

Kaniskina supreme – Cheboksary 2008

Cheboksary, Russia – The home country’s dominance of the 23rd World Walking Cup came full circle when Olga Kaniskina reigned supreme in the women’s 20km from start to finish.

The only downturn for the World champion in Osaka was the single second that denied her country of their third World record of the weekend.

Kaniskina strained for the line, no doubt aware that anything under 1:25:41 would net her an extra $50,000 to go with the first prize of $30,000, but heartbreakingly stopped the clock just a heartbeat beyond the magical time. (more…)

Cheboksary, Russia - The new World record-holder** didn’t look as if he had worked that hard to not only retain the World Walking Cup 50km title at the 23rd IAAF World Race Walking Cup - but rewrite the record books.

Maybe, it never looks that way when you’re in the shape Denis Nizhegorodov is clearly in.

His super-human effort still allowed him to smile, and pose for the cameras seconds after he crossed the finish line and chat effortlessly to waiting reporters as if he was awaiting a train. (more…)

Bartsaykin’s World record sets the festival of Race Walking off on a high note - Cheboksary 2008

Cheboksary, Russia – The junior men’s 10km, the first race of the 23rd IAAF World Race Walking Cup, Cheboksary, Russia, went to form with Russia predictably opening the weekend with a win.

Heffernan is asking the right questions ahead of Cheboksary

Cheboksary, Russia - For a long time Robert (Robbie) Heffernan showed potential for honours at highest level - but injuries and disqualifications halted his progress for much of the time since his first IAAF Race Walking Cup in 1999. Injury haunts Plätzer again before World Race Walking Cup

Cheboksary, Russia – The pre-eminent women’s race walker of 2008, Norway’s Kjersti Plätzer, the 2000 Olympic Games 20km silver medallist, has had to withdraw from this weekend’s 23rd IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Cheboksary, Russia, 10-11 May.
The 36-year-old Norwegian had given notice this season that she would be no pushover in either the Cup or this summer’s Beijing Olympics after winning the initial IAAF Challenge race in Mexico, the Rio Maior version last month, and a fine first at the Sesto San Giovanni last weekend, to lead the overall standings in the IAAF Race Walking Challenge 2008.

Injured Deakes withdraws from Cheboksary

Australia’s World 50km Race Walking champion and World record holder Nathan Deakes has announced his withdrawal from the 23rd IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Cheboksary, Russia, 10-11 May.

Mexico intends to return to World Race Walking Cup podium in Cheboksary

Mexico City, Mexico - Eder Sanchez leads a 13 member Mexican contingent for the 23rd IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Cheboksary, Russia, 10-11 May, hoping to bring the first medal for the country in this biennial event since 2002.
Sanchez, 21, won the inaugural leg of the 2008 IAAF Race Walking Challenge in front of his home crowd in Chihuahua, in March, followed by a third place finish on the Olympic course Beijing, a month later. (more…)
